Let us pray for our current president, believing that the will of the Father will be done for this nation through His chosen vessel-President Donald John Trump. That we SHALL prosper due to our unwavering obedience even if persecuted. In the Name of Jesus Christ our LORD- Amen.

Why Christians Should Honor Those in Authority

As Christians, our faith is rooted in teachings that guide us in every area of life, including how we engage with authority. From government leaders to family heads, authority figures play a significant role in maintaining order and structure in society. However, honoring authority is not just a societal expectation; it is a biblical command that Christians are urged to follow. In this article, we will explore why Christians should honor those in authority, supported by key scriptures from the Bible.

1. Authority is Established by God

The Bible teaches that all authority comes from God. This means that whether the ruler is just or unjust, their position of power is ultimately ordained by God. Understanding this foundational principle helps Christians recognize that honoring authority is, in essence, honoring God’s sovereignty.

In Romans 13:1-2, Paul writes:

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”

This passage clearly underscores that authority itself is part of God’s plan, and rebelling against authority is seen as rebellion against God’s design. Christians are thus called to honor and respect those in positions of power because their authority is granted by God.

2. Submission to Authority Reflects Christlike Humility

Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of humility and submission. He submitted to the authority of His earthly parents, even though He was the Son of God, and He submitted to the Roman authorities, even when He was wrongfully accused and sentenced to death. His submission to the authorities was part of God’s redemptive plan.

In Philippians 2:5-8, Paul encourages believers to have the same attitude of humility that Christ demonstrated:

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”

If Jesus, in His divine nature, was willing to submit to earthly authorities, Christians should likewise be willing to honor and respect those in authority. Honoring authority is a reflection of the humility that Christ demonstrated.

3. Respect for Authority Promotes Peace and Order

The role of authority figures—whether in the government, family, or church—is to maintain order and justice. God has instituted these authorities to promote peace and well-being in society. When Christians honor those in authority, it fosters harmony within communities and enables the proper functioning of society.

In 1 Timothy 2:1-2, Paul writes:

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

This passage emphasizes that Christians should pray for and respect those in authority so that they can lead in a way that promotes peace and allows believers to live godly lives. Honoring authority enables Christians to experience peace in their personal lives and within their communities.

4. Honoring Authority is Part of Honoring God’s Commandments

The Bible includes commands to honor both God and others, which extends to those in positions of authority. In Exodus 20:12, one of the Ten Commandments instructs children to honor their parents, which lays the foundation for honoring all forms of authority:

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

This commandment goes beyond the family structure and applies to all forms of authority—parents, teachers, leaders, and government officials INCLUDING the 47th President of the United States of America- President Donald Trump. By honoring those who are in authority, we are practicing obedience to God’s commandments, demonstrating respect, and fostering a spirit of gratitude.

5. Honoring Authority Brings Blessings

The Bible also teaches that honoring authority leads to blessings, both spiritually and practically. In Ephesians 6:1-3, Paul writes:

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—’so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’”

While this specific passage refers to honoring parents, the principle extends to all authority figures. Honoring authority brings about well-being, stability, and blessings in life. Whether it is in the family, the workplace, or the government, respecting those in charge leads to favorable outcomes.

6. Honor is an Act of Obedience to God

Ultimately, honoring those in authority is an act of obedience to God. The Bible is clear that Christians are to submit to governing authorities as a way of submitting to God’s will for their lives. This obedience is not conditional upon the goodness or fairness of the leaders but is a demonstration of trust in God’s greater plan.

In Titus 3:1-2, Paul exhorts Christians:

“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.”

By submitting to authority, Christians display obedience and respect for God’s will, trusting that He works through all circumstances, even when we do not fully understand them.

Conclusion

Honoring those in authority is an essential part of the Christian life, rooted in the belief that all authority is established by God. As followers of Christ, Christians are called to respect authority figures, reflecting Christ’s humility, promoting peace and order, obeying God’s commandments, and ultimately receiving blessings. While honoring authority may sometimes be challenging, the Bible assures us that it is an act of obedience that pleases God and leads to a flourishing life.

Through honoring authority, Christians demonstrate their trust in God’s sovereignty and their commitment to living out His will in every area of life. Whether in the home, workplace, or nation, Christians are called to honor those in authority, knowing that in doing so, they honor God Himself.
