“Repent [change your inner self—your old way of thinking, regret past sins, live your life in a way that proves repentance; seek God’s purpose for your life], for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 3:2 (AMPC).
Repentance. It’s a word we hear a lot, especially in religious contexts. But what does it truly mean? Is it just feeling bad about something we’ve done?
While regret is certainly a part of repentance, it goes deeper than that. Repentance is a conscious decision to turn away from something wrong. It’s the act of acknowledging our mistakes, feeling remorseful for them, and committing to changing our behavior.
Here’s a breakdown of the key aspects of repentance:
- Recognition: We have to first recognize that we’ve done something wrong. This might involve self-reflection, or it could be brought to our attention by someone else.
- Regret: Once we recognize our mistake, we should feel genuine regret for it. This isn’t just a fleeting pang of guilt, but a deep understanding of the harm we’ve caused.
- Resolution: True repentance goes beyond just feeling bad. It involves a firm decision to change our ways. We should be committed to not repeating the mistake and actively seeking to do better.
- Restitution (optional): In some cases, repentance might involve making amends for our wrongdoings. This could take the form of an apology, returning something stolen, or taking steps to fix any damage we’ve caused.
Repentance is a powerful tool for personal growth. It allows us to learn from our mistakes and become better people. It’s not always easy, but the journey of repentance can be incredibly rewarding.
Here are some additional thoughts on repentance:
- Repentance is for everyone: We all make mistakes, and repentance is open to everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs.
- It’s a process, not an event: Repentance isn’t a one-time thing. It’s a continuous process of self-reflection and growth.
- It can be liberating: Owning up to our mistakes and seeking to make amends can be a freeing experience.
“If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
Repentance is the opportunity for us to make a decision to align with the will of God and His plans for salvation and eternal life. When we know better we should do better. As we grow in the knowledge and discernment of God- we also grow in the understanding of His ways. His ways are higher and His thoughts are higher. The Holy Spirit will elevate our minds to perceive what is God’s good, acceptable, and perfect will for our lives and our loved ones. We will then lead by example by embodying the identity Christ died for us to receive.
Spiritual rebirth made a place for the death of our old self. We cannot continue to live according to the power of the flesh. The children of God were freed by the Blood of Jesus. The Lamb of God took away the consequences of sin. Through this new Life, new Way, and ever-unfolding Truth- we can access God’s desires and conform in totality to the Image and Likeness of His Christ with the help and power of the Holy Spirit.
Continue to trust God for your complete transformation. Hold fast to the Truth that was first revealed to you. Resist the enemy as much as possible. It is not by might, not by power but by the Spirit of God you will overcome ALL the works of the devil and NOTHING shall be able to harm you. Call out to God in times of need and never give up. And when you’ve done all that you can…just stand.
God is with you now and forever.
Be blessed today in Jesus’ name. Amen.
