Emotional Intelligence. A Biblical Perspective.

By nurturing our EQ, we become better equipped to fulfill the Great Commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).

The Bible offers a wealth of wisdom on living a fulfilling life, and emotional intelligence (EQ) is no exception. While the term itself isn’t found in scripture, the core principles of EQ align beautifully with Christian values.

EQ encompasses self-awareness, managing your emotions, understanding others’ feelings, and fostering healthy relationships. The Bible emphasizes these very aspects in numerous verses.

For instance, Proverbs 14:30 says, “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy rots the bones” [NIV]. This highlights self-awareness and emotional management. We’re called to recognize unhealthy emotions like envy and choose peace instead.

EQ also involves empathy, a core Christian value. Romans 12:15 instructs us to “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep” [NIV]. This verse emphasizes understanding and responding to the emotions of others.

So how can we cultivate biblical EQ? Here are some pointers:

  • Seek God’s guidance: Pray for the Holy Spirit’s wisdom to navigate your emotions and relationships (James 1:5).
  • Study the Bible: Scripture provides countless examples of emotionally intelligent characters, both positive (Jesus) and negative (King Saul). Learn from their stories.
  • Practice self-reflection: Regularly examine your motivations and emotional responses. Consider journaling or talking to a trusted friend or mentor.
  • Develop active listening skills: Pay close attention to others, both verbally and nonverbally. Try to see things from their perspective.

By nurturing our EQ, we become better equipped to fulfill the Great Commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).

Emotional intelligence allows us to love God more deeply and connect with others in a meaningful way, reflecting God’s love in the world.
