The Art of DISCERNMENT: A Biblical Perspective.

Discernment is a highly valuable gift. Here are some life changing truths that should increase your value of discernment.

In a world brimming with choices and possibilities, the ability to discern wisely is invaluable. Whether it’s making decisions about relationships, career paths, or ethical dilemmas, discernment guides us through life’s complexities. But what does discernment truly entail, and how does the Bible shed light on this essential skill?

Understanding Discernment

Discernment, in its essence, is the ability to perceive and comprehend what is right or wrong, true or false, beneficial or harmful. It’s not merely about making choices but making godly choices aligned with divine wisdom and principles.

In Proverbs 3:5-6, we find a profound encouragement: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” This verse underscores the importance of relying on God’s guidance rather than solely on our limited understanding.

Biblical Examples of Discernment

Throughout the Bible, we encounter numerous examples of individuals exercising discernment in various situations. One notable instance is found in 1 Kings 3:16-28, where King Solomon’s wisdom is displayed in resolving a dispute between two women claiming to be the mother of a child. Through discernment granted by God, Solomon identifies the true mother and delivers righteous judgment.

Additionally, the book of Proverbs is replete with wisdom regarding discernment. Proverbs 2:6-8 highlights the divine source of discernment: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.”

Developing Discernment

While discernment is a gift from God, it’s also a skill that can be cultivated through prayer, study of scripture, and seeking wise counsel. Psalm 119:105 declares, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” The Word of God serves as a guiding light, illuminating our choices and revealing His will.

Moreover, James 1:5 encourages believers to ask God for wisdom: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” This verse emphasizes the importance of humility and dependence on God in the pursuit of discernment.

Conclusion

Discernment is not a solitary endeavor but a journey walked in communion with God. By aligning our hearts with His Word and seeking His guidance, we can navigate life’s complexities with wisdom and clarity. As we cultivate discernment, may we echo the prayer of the psalmist in Psalm 143:10: “Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”
